Lesson 01 - 放屁

As China is becoming more prominent in the world more and more westerners are working and making vacation plans to visit, 中国, or the ‘middle kingdom’.

Now, if you are a new visitor to China you, like many others, may not be able to speak or even comprehend Chinese.

Chinese is a tonal language meaning that slight inflections in the way you talk matter. Comprehending the written language is even more difficult when considering that one needs to know at least three thousand plus characters to be functionally fluent.

This pod-cast, unlike the other Chinese language pod-casts is not meant to help you learn how to get by in China. You will not learn how to say things such as:

How much does this cost?

Can you give me a better price?

Where is the bathroom?


You will also not learn how to understand spoken Chinese phrases such as:

欢迎管理 (welcome to customers)

你从那里来得？ (where are you from?)

你为什么想来中国？（why did you come to China?)


Instead you will learn things that are far more useful, or far more useless depending on who you are. This pod-cast will teach the basic slang and profanity that is used in China and Taiwan along with situations in which they may be used in.

It is my great hope that if you are traveling in China and hear someone say to you something that you learned from this pod-cast, that you will be able to react accordingly if it is slang, or you may promptly raise the third digit on either hand and promptly say “去死” or “敢你妈” (we will cover these terms in future episodes).

Lesson 01

放屁 literally meaning fart. Not necessarily a bad term, although slightly comical if you are eight.

The term again is 放屁

You can use it in the normal sense like;

我好想放屁。 I really want to fart.

or

刚刚谁再者放屁，怎么都是韩国泡菜味？
Who just farted here? It really smells of Korean pickled vegetables.


But in the slang sense 放屁 translated into standard American vernacular means, Bullshit.

Now lets hear it in a short conversation:

A: 嘿，你知道我昨天跟你的妹妹去赌博，赢了十万块。
B: 我听你在放屁！我妹妹跟我说你输很多钱，还要跟她接五十块才能买火车票。

A: Hey, did you know when I went gambling with your little sister yesterday I won
100,000 dollars?
B: Bullshit! My little sister told me you lost a lot of money, you even had to borrow 50
dollars from her to buy a train ticket.


The key phrase is:

我听你在放屁！

This phrase literally means: What you are saying to me is bullshit!

But when used in Chinese this phrase simply means “bullshit”.
